In the 2005 Six Nations, Ireland won their first three matches, but two losses meant that Ireland finished in third place.
In the 2006 Six Nations, Ireland won the Triple Crown for the second time in three years and finished second overall. In June, they ran New Zealand close twice, and in the last autumn international at Lansdowne Road, Ireland beat Australia 21–6 to reach a best-ever third in the IRB World Rankings.
